The situation in Zimbabwe is extremely troubling. At a time when the opposition has called for a general strike, to continue until the results of the presidential election are published, and the police have banned any public demonstrations, France once again deplores the fact that these results have still not been announced. It has been 17 days since the vote, and we have been told they should be published on April 19. We will see, but they should have been published the day of the vote.

Foreign and European Affairs Minister Bernard Kouchner went to Warsaw on April 15 where he was invited to attend the official ceremonies commemorating the 65th anniversary of the Warsaw ghetto uprising, co-chaired by President Kaczynski and President Shimon Peres. The minister met the last surviving commander of the insurrection, Marek Edelman, to whom he presented the insignia of commander of the Legion of Honor.

 

Visit of Hungarian Foreign Minister Kinga Goncz (14.04.08)

The visit comes ahead of the conclusion of a “ strategic partnership” between our two countries sought by President Nicolas Sarkozy and Hungarian Prime Minster Ferenc Gyurcsany, which is due to be signed shortly.

The meetings will be used to examine the main priorities of the French EU presidency and strengthen our points of agreement on major issues: the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty, the future and duration of the CAP, the development and financing of common European policies, especially in energy.

France deplores the violent incidents that have occurred in the last few days in Port-au-Prince and other cities in Haiti, causing the deaths of several people. It calls for a prompt return to calm.

These demonstrations were a protest against the “ dear cost of living, ” that is, the increase in the price of foodstuffs which severely affects the poorest Haitians.

We understand the great difficulties the people face in their daily lives, but the Haitian people have nothing to gain by a return to disorder and violence.

Ratification of the CTBT (06.04.08)

Ten years ago, on April 6, 1998, France filed its instrument of ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) with the UN secretary-general in New York. The UK took the same step simultaneously.

France remains strongly committed to the entry into force of the CTBT. On March 21 President Sarkozy, speaking in Cherbourg, proposed a plan of action for nuclear disarmament.

In view of certain allegations concerning Colonel Bacar’ s situation, we want to repeat that France condemned right from the outset Anjouan island’ s attempted secession and as of June 2007 it suspended all cooperation with the de facto authorities of this part of the Union of the Comoros.

France provided assistance to the African Union’ s military operation on Anjouan, specifically by transporting Tanzanian troops between Dar-es-Salaam and Moroni.

Administrative divisions:

France is divided into 26 administrative regions. 22 are in metropolitan France (21 are on the continental part of metropolitan France; one is the territorial collectivity of Corsica) , and four are overseas regions.
