Disturbing situation in Zimbabwe (16.05.08)

The development of the situation is very disturbing. As you will remember, the announcement of the opposition’ s victory in the legislative elections on April 3 triggered a campaign of intimidation, violence and sacking of homes on a wide scale, especially in rural areas.

The announcement of a 90-day extension on May 14 to the 21-day timeframe for holding the second round increases our concern about the continuous campaign of repression as seen in constant human rights violations and the massive displacement of people.

Continuing rocket fire on Israel from the Gaza Strip (15.05.08)

France strongly condemns the continuing rocket fire on Israel from the Gaza Strip. On Friday May 9 and Monday May 12 these attacks claimed the lives of two Israeli civilians, one of whom was a 70-year-old woman, in the communities of Kfar Aza and Yesha, and seriously wounded over ten people this Wednesday, May 14, in Ashkelon.

 

Tropical Cyclone Nargis (14.05.08)

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs dispatched a chartered plane today carrying 40 tons of emergency supplies (water purification tablets and emergency food) from the NGO Action Against Hunger (AGH) for the victims of Cyclone Nargis. The aircraft took off from the airport at Vatry with permission to land in Burma where it will arrive in the night (6:15 a.m. local time). These supplies will be received and handled on the spot by AGH teams working in Burma.

"We welcome the Arab League Initiative, and its May 11 statement and intention to dispatch a delegation to Lebanon to lead a return to dialogue. We fully support the efforts of the Arab League, Qatari Prime Minister Hamid bin Jassim, Secretary General Amr Moussa, and the delegation of the foreign ministers of Algeria, Bahrain, Djibouti, Jordan, Morocco, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. We call for the immediate election of a president without prior conditions, the establishment of a national unity government, and the holding of general elections in conformity with an electoral law agreed upon by all parties, in accordance with the Arab League plan."

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs is getting ready to send a heavy cargo plane (70 to 80 tons) loaded with emergency supplies: tents, blankets, covers, tarps, kitchen kits, boxes of medicines and assorted products. These will be handed over to organizations providing relief, the Chinese Red Cross in particular. The value of the cargo is estimated at 250, 000 euros.

As soon as the news broke of the earthquake which struck China today, M. Bernard Kouchner, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, sent a letter to his Chinese opposite number informing him of France’ s solidarity.

In the wake of Tropical Cyclone Nargis, which caused several hundred deaths and considerable damage along the Burmese coast, France expresses its deep sympathy and solidarity to the Burmese people. France stands ready to provide assistance if the Burmese authorities ask for international aid.

At the invitation of the Norwegian foreign minister Bernard Kouchner took part in the meeting of the Ad Hoc Liaison Committee (AHLC) which is coordinating development assistance to the Palestinian Territories.

The meeting followed on the AHLC meeting in New York in September 2007 and the international donors’ conference for the Palestinian state which was held in Paris on December 17, 2007. It was the occasion to recall the importance for the entire international community of building strong and independent Palestinian institutions.

As Foreign and European Affairs Minister Bernard Kouchner said, France welcomes the signing of a Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) between the European Union and Serbia at the general affairs/external relations council in Luxembourg on April 29. This is an important step towards the country’ s closer ties with the European Union.

The council also decided to suspend visa sanctions on Uzbekistan for another six months, considering that the country’ s progress on human rights allowed it to send a political signal of encouragement to the country’ s authorities. The sanctions as a whole will be a subject of debate in October during the French presidency of the EU.

Administrative divisions:

France is divided into 26 administrative regions. 22 are in metropolitan France (21 are on the continental part of metropolitan France; one is the territorial collectivity of Corsica) , and four are overseas regions.
